Creating a premium brand in a commoditised category

Overview

Reservoir Partners partnered with Mackays Marketing to develop and launch Ruby Rise, a premium red papaya brand designed to differentiate within a largely commoditised category. The work focused on brand creation, positioning and building a platform to support retail growth and consumer recognition.

The Opportunity

Papaya was largely perceived as a generic product, with limited brand distinction and low consumer awareness of quality differences. There was no meaningful brand differentiation in category, low awareness of red papaya versus traditional varieties, limited consumer understanding of taste and quality differences, and a clear opportunity to premiumise and create a branded proposition.

Our Approach

Reservoir Partners partnered with Mackays Marketing to lead the development of the brand and go-to-market strategy. We created the Ruby Rise name and brand identity, defined a premium positioning centred on taste, colour and quality, developed packaging and visual identity to stand out at shelf, built a clear brand narrative to educate and engage consumers, and provided strategic direction across launch and retail execution.

The Outcome

Ruby Rise demonstrates how clear positioning and strong brand execution can transform a commodity product into a premium, differentiated offer. A clear point of difference in a commoditised category, strong alignment between product quality and brand positioning, and effective collaboration between strategy and delivery partners were the foundations of its success.
